High Desert Holidays - 2023

Sat, Dec 16 2023
High Desert Harmony Chorus welcomed more than 40 community members to our Guest Chorus this fall to sing with us at our annual "High Desert Holidays" show on Sat., Dec. 16, 2023! Together with the Hug High School Choir, we had nearly 75 singers on stage for our final three numbers, ending with "Let There Be Peace On Earth." It was truly a memorable experience.

More than 300 audience members attended the show at the beautiful new Hug High School Theater. Students were involved in every part of this show, including running the lights, sound, video recording and photography. They did an amazing job and were fantastic to work with!

In addition to High Desert Harmony and the Guest Chorus, Free Range quartet, the Hug High School choir, and dancers from "Around the Stage" added their unique take on the season with beautiful renditions of holiday classics.

Many thanks to Emcee Malary Engstrom, James Meservy, Director of Choirs and Orchestras at Hug High, and our sponsors, donors and supporters. This program was made possible with generous support from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A video recording of the show is available here.

Harmony in the Park - A Celebration of Barbershop Music

Sun, Jul 9 2023
High Desert Harmony Chorus presented "Harmony in the Park -- A Celebration of Barbershop Music"  on Sunday, July 9, 2023 to an enthusiastic audience of more than 400 people. Wingfield Park in downtown Reno is the perfect venue for this fun family-oriented show, which also featured the Silver Dollar Chorus, Free Range quartet and the Question Marks quartet.  The evening started out with an interactive workshop on the joys of barbershop music -- the kids loved learning the brief four-part tag which they sang on stage with HDH.

HDH appreciates being part of Artown each year, and we thank our sponsors, including the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, whose support made this production possible.

High Desert Holidays

Sun, Dec 15 2019
High Desert Harmony's festive season of singing culminated in our annual holiday show, “High Desert Holidays,” on Dec. 15, 2019 at Harrah’s Sammy’s Showroom in downtown Reno. What a fabulous venue this was, and we were thrilled to have a near-capacity crowd on hand to enjoy holiday favorites sung by HDH and several quartets, as well as a very special performance by the young ladies of Reed High School's Visions Ensemble. For the second year, HDH welcomed a Holiday Guest Chorus to join us on stage for three holiday classics. Thirty enthusiastic and talented ladies from the community rehearsed with us for six weeks prior to the show to get a taste of the fun and excitement of barbershop music. It was wonderful singing with and getting to know these lovely ladies!

A Cappella on the River - An Artown Performance

Mon, Jul 8 2019
The ladies of High Desert Harmony had a great time at our annual Artown show on July 8, 2019. This year the show was held at Reno's historic First United Methodist Church in downtown Reno to an enthusiastic full house.  Joining the chorus were three of our quartets: Free Range, Ransom Notes and Serafina.

Our July calendar is full of other Artown activities, including singing the National Anthem at the Chamber of Commerce Biz Ball Championship game; participating in Discover the Arts; and performing at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. We love Artown!

High Desert Holidays

Mon, Dec 10 2018
High Desert Harmony celebrated the holiday season in grand style on Dec. 10, 2018 with "High Desert Holidays," at McKinley Arts & Culture Center in Reno. We were thrilled to have a sellout crowd on hand to enjoy our traditional holiday favorites, as well as the enthusiastic musical offerings of Reno High School's women's chorus and Echo Loder Elementary School's honor choir.

High Desert Harmony was joined  for three songs by our first-ever Holiday Guest Chorus -- 14 ladies from the community who rehearsed with us for five weeks prior to the show to get a taste of the fun and excitement of barbershop music. It was wonderful having these enthusiastic ladies on stage with us and we hope they'll be back for more in the New Year!

Artown Performance

Mon, Jul 30 2018
Every July, Reno becomes Artown, and High Desert Harmony was thrilled to take part in this annual event once again. On July 30th, we presented an old-time radio show, complete with an emcee, funny commercials, call-in requests, light-up applause sign, and radio jingles. Our “Friends & Family” show was July 23rd, and both nights had big audiences and thunderous applause (thanks in part to that applause sign)! Our newest quartet, Sierra Sirens, debuted on July 30th, with Amy Fleming (tenor), Alana Ridge (lead), Jenny Carr (baritone), and Daria Tavoularis (bass).
